Fantasy Team Football update – SBAC & Relegation Leagues!

With two weeks to go, let’s look at the SBAC and RELEGATION LEAGUE standings and possibilities!

First, here are the SBAC conferences, with commentary about the possible outcomes coming up…

Rutgers – 8 1 6 (163) 2
Massachusetts – 5 1 6 (114) 2
Connecticut – 4 0 6 1 (203) 1

With Army upsetting Penn State this weekend, the US Military Academy is two wins away from winning the NEW ENGLAND conference and taking a spot in the 16-team playoff! Only Syracuse can interfere with one of those two teams winning the conference at this point.

OHIO W L T Point Diff PP This Week
Notre Dame – 6 7 0 132 14
Purdue – 9 5 2 150 10
Ohio State – 8 5 2 150 10 ND d BGSU 54 to 8
West Virginia – 10 4 3 65 8 Miami d Marshall 31-26

Ohio U – 7 3 4 22 6 Purdue d Kent St 58-29
Marshall – 4 2 5 (97) 4 Ohio U d WV 61-34
Kent State – 2 2 5 (129) 4
Indiana – 3 2 5 (147) 4
Bowling Green – 1 1 6 (174) 2

Notre Dame is this close to clinching the OHIO conference, holding a two-game lead with two to play.

GREAT LAKES W L T Point Diff PP This Week
Michigan – 4 6 1 196 12
Toledo – 7 6 1 33 12
*North Dakota State – 10 5 2 94 10 Akron 51-14 Minnesota
Michigan State – 5 4 3 39 8 Michigan 49-23 Mich State
Wisconsin – 10 4 3 36 8 EMU d WMU 31 to -5
Eastern Michigan – 3 4 3 (61) 8 Wisconsin 39-30 CMU
Central Michigan – 2 2 5 (87) 4 Toledo d NDSU 33-15
Minnesota – 6 2 5 (104) 4
Akron -1 1 6 (53) 2
Western Michigan – 8 1 6 (99) 2

Since Michigan beat Toledo two weeks ago (44 to negative ten – I love the way the scoring works!), and Toledo’s beaten NDSU (although NDSU did give Michigan their only loss), the GREAT LAKES conference seems to be lining up for the obvious 1-2-3 finish.Maybe.

MIDWESTERN W L T Point Diff PP This Week
Iowa State – 5 7 0 124 14
Missouri – 7 6 1 88 12
Cincinnati – 2 6 1 77 12 Nebraska 68-22 Ball State
Iowa – 4 4 3 87 8 Iowa State 30-15 Iowa
Northwestern – 9 4 3 40 8 Illinois 64-50 NIU
Nebraska – 6 3 4 38 6 Cincinnati 58-37 NW
*South Dakota State – 10 2 5 (47) 4 Missouri 57-46 SDakState
Illinois – 3 2 5 (125) 4
Northern Illinois – 8 1 6 (76) 2
Ball State – 1 0 7 (216) 0

Only the Cyclones, Tigers, and Bearcats are in a position to win the MIDWESTERN conference. Iowa State’s last two games are against Missouri and Cincinnati, so they’ll each have a shot at the title.

MID-ATLANTIC W L T Point Diff PP This Week
Kentucky – 3 6 0 1 151 13
Appalachian State – 1 6 1 150 12
Virginia – 7 5 2 212 10 Appalachian d Navy 39 to -6
Virginia Tech – 8 4 2 1 (22) 9 Maryland 26-7 Louisville
*James Madison – 10 4 3 44 8 Kentucky 15-15 Va Tech
Maryland – 5 3 4 35 6 ECU d WKU 44-43
Navy – 6 2 5 (95) 4 Virginia 14 to -10 JMU
Western Kentucky – 9 2 5 (121) 4
East Carolina – 2 2 5 (155) 4
Louisville – 4 0 7 (199) 0

Only Appie State has a chance to keep Kentucky from winning the MID-ATLANTIC conference, and they play in the last round of the season. Winner takes the title. In theory, Virginia could catch them, but because of that Nov 17 game between Appalachian and the Wildcats, it would take a strange sequence to catch them.

TOBACCO ROAD W L T Point Diff PP This Week
Vanderbilt – 8 6 1 63 12
No Carolina St – 5 5 1 1 162 11
North Carolina – 4 5 2 96 10 Duke 71-27 Old Dominion
Duke- 1 4 2 1 87 9 NC State 46-21 No Carolina
Middle Tenn St – 3 4 3 22 8 Vanderbilt 41-37 MTSU
Tennessee -7 3 4 1 6 Memphis 34-17 Wake Forest
Memphis – 2 3 4 (52) 6 Tennessee 44-17 NC A&T
Wake Forest – 9 2 5 (60) 4
Old Dominion -6 2 5 (134) 4
*North Carolina A&T – 10 0 7 (211) 0

With UNC’s loss, Vanderbilt takes the lead on TOBACCO ROAD, but the two North Carolina state schools and Duke can all still win the title.

PLANTATION W L T Point Diff PP This Week
Clemson – 3 7 0 298 14
Georgia – 4 6 1 166 12
South Carolina – 8 5 2 62 10 GT d. Charlotte 51-35
*Kennesaw State – 10 4 3 (13) 8 Georgia 54 to -6 GSU
Troy – 9 4 3 (40) 8 Clemson 45-9 South Carolina
Georgia Tech – 6 3 4 (9) 6 Troy 47-34 Coastal Carolina
Coastal Carolina – 2 2 5 (113) 4 Kennesaw d Liberty 58-37
Liberty – 7 2 5 (157) 4
Charlotte – 1 1 5 1 (65) 3
Georgia State – 5 0 6 1 (162) 1

Undoubtedly, the PLANTATION conference is one of two that will end up sending its runner-up to the 16-team playoff as a wild card – Georgia will probably finish with just that one loss to Clemson, and be one of the two teams highest on the CFP list without a conference title.

Central Florida – 1 6 1 119 12
Florida – 2 5 2 114 10
Florida State – 5 4 3 71 8 UCF 18 to -3 Miami
Georgia Southern – 6 4 3 24 8 Florida St 30 to -9 FIU
Miami-FL – 7 4 3 21 8 FAU 72-4 USF
*Jacksonville State – 10 3 4 (26) 6 Florida 25-14 South Alabama
Florida International – 4 3 4 (52) 6 Georgia Sthn 14-13 JSU
South Florida  – 9 2 5 (84) 4
South Alabama – 8 2 5 (143) 4
Florida Atlantic – 3 1 6 (42) 2

Only UCF and Florida can win the PANHANDLE conference at this point, and since UCF won 14-13 in week five, the Gators have to make up two games on the 20-game-win-streak leaders. Good luck.

DEEP SOUTH W L T Point Diff PP This Week
Alabama – 1 6 1 250 12
Mississippi State – 4 5 2 138 10
Auburn – 2 5 2 43 10 Alabama 63 to -7 So Miss
UA-Birmingham – 8 4 3 142 8 Miss St 48-16 Ole Miss
UL-Lafayette – 9 4 3 (51) 8 UAB d LaTech 68-11
Ole Miss- 5 3 4 (96) 6 Auburn d ULL 38-22
Southern Miss – 6 3 4 (140) 6 Tulane 85-63 UL-Monroe
Tulane – 7 2 5 (22) 4
Louisiana Tech – 3 2 5 (82) 4
UL-Monroe – 10 1 6 (182) 2

After an early upset to TULANE, of all teams, 36-35 in week two, the unstoppable force that is the Crimson Tide has taken control of the DEEP SOUTH conference, with two games to go. And since the competitors at 5-2 have both already lost to Alabama, it’s going to take two more ‘Bama losses for either of them to have a chance to take the title and move on to the round of 16.

GULF COAST W L T Point Diff PP This Week
LSU – 4 7 0 185 14
Texas – 6 6 1 165 12
Houston – 3 4 3 97 8 Texas d Arkansas 39-22
Texas A&M – 7 4 3 94 8 LSU d Rice 39-7
Arkansas – 1 4 3 63 8 Texas St 47-28 Houstona
Arkansas State – 2 3 4 17 6 Ark St 54-8 UTSA
UT-San Antonio – 9 3 4 (29) 6 Texas A&M 57-1 Sam Houston St
*Sam Houston State – 10 2 5 (28) 4
Texas State – 8 2 5 (76) 4
Rice – 5 0 7 (218) 0

LSU defeated Texas in week six, 21-5, setting up the same kind of almost-insurmountable lead as Alabama and UCF have. Texas, however, might be able to qualify for one of the two wild card spots – even assuming Georgia has one of them locked down.

LONE STAR W L T Point Diff PP This Week
Oklahoma – 3 6 1 157 12
Texas Tech- 7 6 1 155 12
Baylor – 1 5 2 4 10
North Texas – 2 4 3 15 8 Baylor 36-25 TCU
TCU – 6 3 4 (30) 6 SMU 51-27 OSU
SMU – 5 3 4 (37) 6 Oklahoma 36-25 Tulsa
UTEP – 9 3 4 (88) 6 North Texas 53-40 UTEP
*Illinois State – 10 2 5 (12) 4 Texas Tech 40-13 Illinois State
Oklahoma State – 4 2 5 (42) 4
Tulsa – 8 1 6 (112) 2

Tech and OU are neck and neck in the LONE STAR conference, and although the Sooners won their round six matchup, 39-9, it will only take one mistake for the Red Raiders to overtake them.

ROCKY MOUNT’N W L T Point Diff PP This Week
BYU – 4 6 1 31 12
Arizona State – 3 5 1 1 68 11
Kansas State – 8 5 1 1 60 11 Air Force 55-32 CSU
Air Force – 1 5 2 84 10 BYU 38-34 Colorado
Arizona – 2 4 2 1 77 9 Arizona St 51-33 KSU
Kansas – 7 3 3 1 (10) 7 Arizona 47-33 New Mexico
Colorado – 5 3 4 39 6 Kansas 44-36 NMSU
New Mexico – 9 1 6 (107) 2
Colorado State – 6 1 6 (138) 2
New Mexico State – 10 0 7 (116) 0

With the ties, there are FIVE teams with a realistic shot at winning the ROCKY MOUNTAIN conference with two weeks to go. Because they face erratic Arizona and ineffective New Mexico, BYU has a pretty good shot at maintaining their conference lead and becoming the conference rep in the 16-team tournament. but ASU and K-State both have winnable games in front of them as well.

BEAR REPUBLIC W L T Point Diff PP This Week
Fresno State – 2** 7 0 142 14
Stanford – 6 5 2 85 10
UCLA – 7 5 2 30 10 Stanford 32-29 Cal
Nevada – 3 4 2 1 47 9 San Diego 44-32 San Jose
San Diego State – 4 3 3 1 (13) 7 Nevada 47-17 UNLV
USC – 9 3 4 (19) 6 Fresno 43-23 USC
*Weber State – 10 2 4 1 17 5 UCLA 29-22 Weber State
California – 1 2 4 1 (25) 5
San Jose State – 5 2 5 (123) 4
UNLV – 8 0 7 (175) 0

Because Fresno State’s already defeated both Stanford and UCLA in earlier rounds, the Bulldogs are the first team to clinch a conference title this season, winning the BEAR REPUBLIC conference with two games yet to play!

NORTHWEST W L T Point Diff PP This Week
Washington  – 7 7 0 141 14
Utah- 5 7 0 127 14
Utah State – 6 6 1 91 12 Utah St 45-18 Boise St
Oregon – 3 4 3 34 8 Utah 21-11 Oregon St
*Eastern Washington – 10 3 3 1 2 7 Oregon 32-25 Wazzu
Boise State – 1 3 4 (11) 6 Wyoming 47-14 Hawaii
Washington State – 8 2 4 1 35 5 Washington 36-35 EWU
Wyoming – 9 2 5 (4) 4
Oregon State -4 0 7 (174) 0
Hawaii – 2 0 7 (187) 0

Finally, in the NORTHWEST conference, we’re eagerly anticipating this week’s matchup between 7-0 leader Washington hosting 7-0 leader Utah, the game which will settle the conference title. (Because of Texas’ position, it seems unlikely the loser will get a wild card berth, but it’s possible.) If this were a relegation league, we’d also be eagerly awaiting the Oregon State at Hawaii game this week to see which team loses and gets relegated to the next lower conference…

Speaking of the RELEGATION LEAGUES….

Let’s take a look at those as well, conference by conference:

California – 2 1 5 2 -81

At this point, with two rounds to go (and only teams #3 and #9 with byes still to play), there are only 13 teams still eligible to play in the national title game foursome: Utah, USC (Utah’s last opponent), Stanford (which plays them in the next round), and Arizona State (which defeated Utah in R2) in the Western Region, Iowa, Oklahoma, Texas, and Northwestern (the Hawkeyes have already beaten Wisconsin and Missouri) in the Midwest; Clemson and Alabama in the Southeast Region (and they meet at Alabama in round nine to end the season); and Penn State, Michigan, and Notre Dame in the Northeast Region.

As far as relegation down to conference level two, remember there’ll be one guaranteed relegation (the 9th-place team) and one possible relegation (team #8 will play the #2 team from the region below to determine that) from each conference in regions 1-5. So, the most likely candidates right now include Cal and Colorado; TCU and Texas A&M; Mississippi State and Duke; and hapless Louisville in the Northeast, with a  group of other possibilities for the second team (West Virginia, Ohio State, Michigan State and Virginia Tech).

With the fact that they have only one game left to play, plus the victories over their two closest pursuers already in hand, Virginia has clinched the Northeast Region’s top spot, giving them automatic inclusion in the next season’s Region One league plus a shot at the Conference Two title in the four-team bracket at the end of this season. If Georgia Tech can defeat Florida this coming Saturday, they’ll also have their top spot solidified. Similarly, Iowa State’s only way off the top step of the Midwest podium is to lose at Memphis this weekend AND have Texas Tech defeat Baylor in R9. Thankfully, while Fresno has the inside track on their Relegation League as well as their already-clinched SBAC title, they can still lose to Utah State, Boise State, OR BYU with one or two losses in the last two weeks.

As for relegations downward, Oregon State, Illinois, NC State and Rutgers remain the most likely candidates. They’re the product of a system meant to replicate what would undoubtedly happen in real life: all the Power Five teams were placed before the Group of Five teams, even though there’s a significant overlap in performance level. (The same thing happens in Conference Four between the worst FBS teams and the best FCS clubs.)

Five teams can still win the Northeast Region of Conference Three, although Army-West Point is flying high (talk about a mixed metaphor!): Buffalo, Miami of Ohio, Temple, and (because they meet in round nine) Cincinnati; (Eastern Michigan is the favorite for relegation at the moment, although Navy, Ohio U, and CMU are all candidates for one of two spots.) In the Southeast, UCF faces competition from two Sun Belt powers, App State and Troy. (USF is “leading” the relegation race, with MTSU and, surprisingly, Tennessee possible for one of the two slots there.)

There are scenarios where literally eight of the nine schools in the Midwest Region could move into an advancement position in the next few weeks – only the 1-4-1 Red Wolves, current relegation leaders, are out of the hunt. Finally, Nevada and Wyoming are the two teams looking at an advancement position into Region Two, at 6-1 and 5-2; Nevada’s guaranteed at least second, while Wyoming would have to lose its next game this weekend and one of the 3-3 teams win twice to have a chance. ALL seven of the other teams face the possibility of relegation, at either 2-4 or 3-3 at the moment.

The difference in these fantasy leagues and real life is borne out by the fact that the 2018 Western Kentucky Hilltoppers football team could be leading anything at all – that’s the very definition of “fantasy” right there. However, seven teams still have a fair chance at the title and to move up to Conference Three with two games to go; only U Conn and Bowling Green, the current relegation favorites, are out of touch.

Despite appearances, FIU actually has the inside track on the SE Four title; having already disposed of UAB on the road, 54-43 (scores get higher when you’re starting with higher ELO-FF ratings!), the Panthers need only win their two remaining games to take the title, although the Blazers have an easier path to one of the two advancement positions at 6-1. The FIU game with South Alabama could guarantee USA relegation, but three other teams are jockeying for a way out.

Similarly, ULL has the advantage over Northern Iowa, having defeated them earlier this season; Illinois State still has a chance if either or both of them lose at least once. On the bottom end, Rice and UTSA are in “control” of their own relegation down to conference 5, where they probably belong.

Finally, in the west, FCS powerhouses NDSU and SDSU, Missouri Valley rivals ranked #1 and #2 at the moment, are dominating the Western region; it seems unlikely EWU can intrude on their advancement at this point. Neither Idaho nor CSUS are doing well this season in reality, and their fantasy counterparts are similarly struggling.

Ironically, Idaho State may trade with their in-state U of I counterparts – having already defeated Cal Poly and San Diego, only North Dakota can stop their stampede to the conference five title. Similarly, Northern Colorado seems destined to be moved down into an awkward symbiosis of team and conference at level six.

The Midwest Region of Conference Five is pretty muddled, with Southern Illinois hoping that they can clear it up by defeating both EIU and Nicholls State these last two weeks. Northwestern State still has a chance to get out of the Relegation tank, especially with a game in Round 9 against McNeese State.

There are five teams within a game of the top of the Southeast region, with Wofford sporting a half-game lead but with their bye still to come. Mercer has a one-game gap to make up to prevent automatic relegation.

Can you top that, Northeast Five? Why, yes we can, comes the answer, as they have SEVEN teams within a game-and-a-half, meaning that ANY of those seven could win the conference region outright, even with just two games to play! On the other hand, however, Richmond has already been guaranteed its relegation trip to Conference Six.

Here in Conference Six, there is no downward movement because we didn’t give them any place to go (we chose not to utilize either the Academic leagues or the HBCs, but they’d be at the same level anyway, and we’re not digging into D2 to continue this process!).

As you see, Tennessee-Martin, Monmouth, Lamar and Davidson are each in the best positions to advance upwards into Conference Five, with a second team from each due to play the second-to-last in a Conference Five region for the same opportunity.
